Reviews

In the article by Q Magazine published on 10th October 2011 entitled "First Impressions of... Coldplay's Mylo Xyloto"[1] they wrote: "Forever destined to be known as The One They Fucked Up At Glasto, Us Against The World begins with delayed patterns of guitar and a lone church organ, before stripping back to just Chris Martin and his acoustic. Its approach sums up what makes Mylo Xyloto ticks; its production is far from stripped-down, but, unlike the bloated X&Y and the do-you-know-what-it-is-yet-cos-we-don't mishmash of Viva La Vida, everything here is a servant to the melody. And, five tracks in, the melodies are some of their best; here, Chris Martin whispers "slow it down" as an orchestral swell builds around him. Just when you think it's going to embark on a Fix You-esque outro, it finishes, perfectly."

First performance

Coldplay first performed Us Against The World at a friends and family gig at The Forum, Kentish Town, London on 31st May 2011. They then continued to play it at the summer festival dates of 2011, beginning at Rock im Park Festival, Nürnberg, Germany (3rd June 2011), and again at Rock am Ring the following day.[2]

The Oracle on Us Against The World

Q. Why Us Against the World was a fixed song on the Festivals Tour setlist and now on the Arena Tour hasn't been played? It is so good! Probably my favorite from MX...
The Oracle replies:
Yes it has. You sent this question on Saturday, yet it was definitely played on Friday in London at the O2 Arena.
I don't normally answer questions on Saturdays but this week I did - about that very song in fact.
I mentioned last week it was also played at Dingwalls but that's not an arena, not by a long way.

Q. Hello dear Oracle!
In Coldplay song Us Against the World says "my drunkard is Danial in a lion's den".
Can u please tell me, who's Danial?
Thanks for ur time.
Anne.
The Oracle replies:
He's Daniel from The Bible.

Q. Dearest Oracle,
I am looking at the back of Mylo Xyloto and I noticed that each song corresponds to a shape below, such as Up with the Birds is a bird shape. Can you tell me why Us Against the World is a sideways letter c and k? Or is it a variant on a stick figure? By the way I love the album but I wish that I hadn't seen footage of the band playing these songs live because I think they sound so much wonderful live.
Thanks for answering my question and have a good day Oracle!
Jessica
The Oracle replies:
Yes it's a stick figure but also the initials CK as you say, which stands for Car Kids.

Lyrics (official)

Oh morning come bursting the clouds amen
Lift off this blindfold let me see again
Bring back the water let your ships roll in
In my heart she left a hole

The tightrope that I’m walking just sways and ties
The devil as he’s talking to those angel’s eyes
And I just want to be there when the lightening strikes
And the saints go marching in

And sing
Slow it down
Through chaos as it swirls
It's us against the world

Like a river to a raindrop I lost a friend
My drunken hazard Daniel in a lion's den
And tonight I know it all has to begin again
So whatever you do, don’t let go

If we could float away
Fly up to the surface and just start again
Lift off before trouble just erodes us in the rain
Just erodes us in the rain
Just erodes us and see roses in the rain saying

Slow it down
Through chaos as it swirls
It's us against the world

Through chaos as it swirls
It's us against the world
